| Diagnosis: | KASSABACH-MERRITT SYNDROME / HEMANGIOMA / HEMANGIOPERICYTOMA | Category: | neoplasm, malignant / neonatal dermatology / lumps & bumps (plaques, nodules, tumors) | ||
| Body Site: | chest / axilla (armpit) | Age: | 11 weeks | ||
| Contributor: | Soo-In Choi | ||||
| Description: | MRI image of the lesion shows a large mass predominantly in the left axilla and pectoral region extending deep to the sternocleidomastoid into the left neck with probable feeding arteries and draining veins arising from the left subclavian and axiallary vessels. | ||||
| Comments: | An 11-week-old boy developed a rapidly enlarging purple tumor on left chest with thrombocytopenia and consumptive coagulopathy. At birth he had a quarter-sized, tan-colored patch that began to grow quickly at 10 weeks of age. There was a color change to dark red/purplish blue and the lesion became hard and tender to palpation. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated features of a hemangioma and the lesion shrunk quickly with high dose intravenous corticosteroids (Solumedrol 2mg/kg/day). | ||||
