  Category: neoplasm, benign /
congenital malformation
Body Site: forehead   Age: 19 years
Contributor: Donna Bilu, MS
Description: Sections of skin show a lobular basophilic tumor without connection to the epidermis. The tumor consists of deeply basophilic cells arranged in nests with peripheral palisading. Tumor stromal clefting and mucin deposition are not identified. The surrounding stroma is loose and paucicellular. Mitotic figures are readily identified. Here, apocrine glands are seen.
Comments: These findings are diagnostic of a nevus sebaceous.

© 2001-2009, DermAtlas
Image Name: Seborrheic_Keratoses_2_030514   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: KERATOSIS, SEBORRHEIC   Category: neoplasm, benign /
lumps & bumps (plaques, nodules, tumors)
Body Site: back   Age: 49 years
Contributor: Donna Bilu, MS
Description: The biopsy is composed of basaloid cells with a mixture of squamous cells. Keratin-filled invaginations and horn cysts are seen.
Comments: This biopsy was taken from an irregularly pigmented papule on the right trapezius area of a 49-year-old man. These histologic features are typical of a seborrheic keratosis.

Diagnosis: NEVUS, PIGMENTED /
NEVUS, PIGMENTED, ATYPICAL /
NEVUS, PIGMENTED, COMPOUND
  Category: neoplasm, benign /
hyperpigmentation
Body Site: foot   Age: 65 years
Contributor: Donna Bilu, MS
Description: There is intraepidermal lentiginous hyperplasia of melanocytes, random cytological atypia, a stromal response, and architectural atypia. Lentiginous hyperplasia means that melanocytes are proliferating in nests along the basal layer, as well as singly. An intradermal component of nevus cells are seen. Cells in the upper dermis are cuboidal and contain more melanin pigment in the cytoplasm than smaller, deeper cells. Focal scarring of the superficial dermis is also common.
Comments: This biopsy of a nevus on the right foot of a 65-year-old woman revealed a compound nevus with architectural disorder and focally severe cytologic atypia. These features may be seen in nevi from individuals with the familial atypical mole-melanoma syndrome.
