| Description: | Before surgery a CT scan of the nose and orbits was performed which showed a 3 cm diameter cutaneous mass overlying the right side of the nose, extending into the right upper and lower eyelid, and involving the preseptal soft tissues of the orbit. | ||||
| Comments: | A 72-year-old farmer was evaluated for recurrent bleeding from an ulcerated plaque on the nose. Five years ago the lesion began with a small white asymptomatic papule which slowly expanded. Three years ago the plaque developed central ulceration with crusting and recurren episodes of bleeding. A skin biopsy revealed a basal cell carcinoma. Before surgery a CT scan of the nose and orbits was performed which showed a 3 cm diameter cutaneous mass overlying the right side of the nose, extending into the right upper and lower eyelid, and involving the preseptal soft tissues of the orbit. | ||||

The hemorrhage prevented examination of her retina. An ultrasound showed significant tumour growth. A computerised tomographic scan of the orbits with infusion showed a fungating exophytic mass occupying the posterior third of the right vitreous. There was no evidence of extension through the globe. | ||||

| Comments: | Sturge-Weber syndrome is defined by the presence of a facial portwine stain, ususlly in the distribution of the first branch of the trigemminal nerve, and ipsilateral leptomeningeal vascular malformation. The choroid of the ipsilateral eye may be involved leading to glaucoma. | ||||
