| Description: | There is a unilocular cyst with a corrugated squamous lining. The inner surface has a bright pink eosinophilic cuticle. Sebaceous lobules are placed at muliple foci around the cyst. There is no cytologic atypia. | ||||
| Comments: | This 23 year old woman had numerous papules/cysts over her trunk and extremities. Two were sampled, each showing a steatocystoma. Solitary cysts and cysts in steatocystoma multiplex are histologically identical. The main differential diagnosis is with a vellus hair cyst, as they are derived from a similar folliculosebaceous anatomy. Vellus hair cysts tend to be much smaller and contain numerous vellus hairs. Abundant sebaceus lobules in the lining would be unusual. | ||||
