Description: thick coat of confluent white reticulated patches
Comments: This healthy 12-day-old infant developed thrush with involvement of the tongue, gingivae, buccal mucosa, palate, and lips. This is a common finding and typically does not require investigation in healthy infants under 12 months of age. Rapid clearance was achieved by applying nystatin suspension to the oral mucosa four times a day. Other measures included application of nystatin to mother's nipples and boiling latex nipples after each use.

Description: erosive mucositis with reticulated white plaques on the tongue
Comments: This 33 year old man with a history of recurrent erythema multiforme minor, probably triggered by recurrent Herpes simplex infection, developed a white reticulated plaque on the tongue. A potassium hydroxide preparation from the tongue showed budding yeast and pseudohyphae typical of thrush which cleared with oral fluconazole. The recurrent erosive mucositis was treated with oral prednisone which made him prone to develop thrush.

Description: edematous crusted fissured lips, eroded white plaque on tongue
Comments: After a 10 day course of antibiotics for tonsilitis, this 5 year old boy developed oral thrush associated with red cracked fissured lips and crusted erosions at the corners of the mouth and on the chin. Cutaneous and oral lesions cleared quickly when he was treated with oral fluconazole.

Comments: A 34 year old man with human immunodeficiency virus infection and CD4 count <100 presented with chronic candidiasis and diffuse bilateral red erosive mucositis. Several biopsies from both sides of the mouth revealed squamous cell carcinoma in situ which was surgically excised.
