| Comments: | This 12 year old girl has mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke like episodes, known as MELAS. Affected individuals usually present with episodic vomiting, seizures, recurrent cerebral insults resembling strokes and causing hemi paresis, hemianopsia, and cortical blindness. MELAS has been associated with mitochondrial mutations in genes MTTL 1, MTND6, and MTTQ. The patients mother has mild symptoms of the disorder. | ||||
