DermAtlas: FOOT - Noonan syndrome
© 2001-2009, DermAtlas
Image Name: noonan_syndrome_1_040212   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: NOONAN SYNDROME /
SCAR
  Category: genodermatosis/genetic disorder
Body Site: foot   Age: 11 years
Contributor: Bernard Cohen, MD
Description: generalized loose baggy skin and scar from surgery for congenital club foot
Comments: This 11-year-old boy with Noonan syndrome demonstrates the typical findings of the autosomal dominant disorder. He had short stature, short broad webbed neck, ptosis, hypertelorism, epicanthal folds, downslanting palpebral fissures, high arched palate, low posterior hair line, micrognathia, and wide spaced nipples. Note the chest scar from repair of severe pulmonic stenosis. His mother also had mild dysmorphic facial features and pulmonic stenosis. He had a history of congenital lymphedema and cystic hygromas of the neck which were diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound and resolved during early infancy. Typically the sternum in Noonan syndrome protrudes at the manubrium and dips inferiorly giving a an unusual pectus carinatum above and excavatum below. Dominant inheritance is often not present as many children represent new mutations. About half the Noonan patients have a change in PTPSN11; the gene(s) involved in other patients have not yet been identified.
