Image Name: phthirus_pubis_2_031123   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: LICE, PUBIC /
PHTHIRUS PUBIS
  Category: infections and infestations /
sexually transmitted disease
Body Site: suprapubic area / thigh   Age: 40 years
Contributor: Majid Shahdi, MD
Description: pubic louse atached to hair on the thigh
Comments: Cursory examination revealed scattered brown scale attached to the waist and thighs. Closer observation with a hand lens demonstrated the organisms attached to the hair. Pediculosis pubis is an infestation by Phthirus pubis. It is spread primarily through sexual contact. Phthirus pubis is morphologically shorter and more rounded than head and body lice. About one third of patients with pubic lice may have a second venereal disease and should be screened.
