DermAtlas: TONGUE, LATERAL BORDER - oral hairy leukoplakia
© 2001-2010, DermAtlas
Image Name: Oral_Hairy_Leukoplakia_2_030224   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: ORAL HAIRY LEUKOPLAKIA   Category: dental/oral disorder /
mucous membrane disorders /
infections and infestations
Body Site: tongue, lateral border   Age: 18 years
Contributor: Douglas Hoffman, MD
Description: vertically oriented corrugated white plaques
Comments: This 18-year-old Human Immunodeficiency Virus positive woman was evaluated in dentistry for white plaques in her mouth. The white vertically oriented corrugated plaques on the side of the tongure are typical and should suggest the diagnosis of Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection even in an otherwise healthy patient. Recent studies have made it clear that Epstein Bar Virus is the pathogen. Similar findings may be seen in idiopathic and tobacco associated leukoplakia and hypertrophic candidiasis.
