| Body Site: | thigh | Age: | 67 years | ||
| Contributor: | Greg Hosler, MD, PhD | ||||
| Description: | There is mild epidermal acanthosis with focal parakeratotic mounds. The mounds lift off the skin surface. There is also spongiosis and basilar vacuolopathy. Rare dyskeratotic cells are identified. Within the dermis, there is a mild perivascular and interstitial infiltrate, consisting of lymphocytes. | ||||
| Comments: | This is pretty typical histology of PR but a slightly atypical presentation. PR usually affects young adults and kids, and is truncal. The pityriasiform reaction pattern is a combination of spongiosis and interface. The lifting mounds are characteristic and correspond to the fine bran-like scale seen clinically. | ||||
