Comments: This mentally retarded adolescent girl with tuberous sclerosis was noted to have a shagreen patch and hypopigmented macule on her lower back at birth. She also had multiple angiofibromas on her face.

Description: 1.5 cm pebbly brown well demarcated plaque
Comments: This healthy adolescent with tuberous sclerosis complained of irritated papules on her face and nose since elementary school and several birthmarks on her forehead, trunk, and extremities. Multiple angiofibromas on her face and small areas in the collagenomas on her forehead, left arm, and chest were treated with the Q-switched alexandrite laser at 14 J/cm2, 10 Hz, and spot size 2 mm. cooling device at level 3. Further treatment was scheduled pending the results of the test spots. This image shows the collagenoma immediately before test spots.

Comments: This 6-year-old girl with tuberous sclerosis was managed for seizures and developmental delay. She had other features of tuberous sclerosis including this shagreen plaque on her lumbosacral area, a smaller similar plaque on the neck, and a hypopigmented patch on her posterior thorax.

Comments: This 28 year old man with tuberous sclerosis was evaluated for carbon dioxide laser ablation of the angiofibromas on his face. He had several congenital hypopigmented macules on the lower abdomen and thighs, a congenital shagreen patch on the upper chest, and several subungual fibromas that developed during adolescence.

Description: hypopigmented firm superficial plaque comprised of multiple smooth topped papules
Comments: A 17 year old boy with tuberous sclerosis demonstrates many of the characteristic findings of the autosomal dominant genodermatosis. Image Dscn1282 demonstrates angiofibromas scattered around a shagreen patch on his back. Image Dscn1284 shows another shagreen patch on his abdomen, and image Dscn1285 shows angiofibromas on his nose cheeks and chin as well as pustules from acne vulgaris on his chin. Angiofibromas, particularly on the cheeks and upper lip, should not be mistaken for comedones and may suggest the diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis even in an otherwise healthy child.
