DermAtlas: ELBOW - calcinosis cutis
© 2001-2010, DermAtlas
Image Name: calcinosis_cutis_1_090401   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: CALCINOSIS CUTIS   Category: deposition disorders /
Metabolic disorders
Body Site: elbow   Age: 10 years
Contributor: Greg Hosler, MD, PhD
Description: Several white rock-hard papules are present on the extensor surface of one elbow. There were no other clinical findings.
Comments: This 10 year old girl presented with several rock-hard papules on the elbow region. These developed over months to years and were asymptomatic. She has no other medical problems. Calcinosis cutis is often dystrophic calcification, and in this location, likely secondary to trauma. Systemic disorders, such as dermatomyositis, in a child, may present with calcinosis cutis. Systemic hypercalcemia is a rare cause of calcinosis cutis in a child.

CALCINOSIS CUTIS
  Category: collagen vascular disease
Body Site: wrist   Age: 6 years
Contributor: Katherine Puttgen, MD
Description: firm yellow-white 4 mm smooth topped papule with surrounding erythema
Comments: This otherwise healthy 6-year-old girl had a several month history of progressive skin changes on the dorsal fingers, a new calcified nodule on the right volar wrist, and intermittent heliotrope rash. There was no clinical or serologic evidence of muscle involvement on two separate screenings 4 months apart. Magnetic resonance imaging of the upper legsI was ordered to rule out subtle myositis and is currently pending.

Image Name: Calcinosis_Cutis_Ulceration_1_061115   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: CALCINOSIS CUTIS /
SCLERODERMA
  Category: collagen vascular disease /
cutaneous sign of systemic disease
Body Site: face / cheek
cheek
  Age: 48 years
Contributor: António Matos da Fonseca, MD
Description: Middle-age woman with a history of diffuse scleroderma for more than 15 years. The patient develops lipoatrophy of the face and multiple calcified subepidermal nodules on the left masseteric region and a large ulceration with secondary infection and exposure of a piece of a homogeneous solid calcic substance. A correcting surgery for removal of the nodules and skin plasty was performed. Histopathologic exam demonstrates multiple calcium deposition in the dermis with a surrounding foreign body giant cell reaction.
Comments: This 48-year-old woman with a history of diffuse scleroderma for more than 15 years developed lipoatrophy of the face and multiple calcified subepidermal nodules over the left masseter. A large ulceration subsequently occurred on the left side of the face exposing rock hard chalky material. The nodules were excised and the defect was repaired. Histopathologic exam demonstrated multiple calcium nodules in the dermis with a surrounding foreign body giant cell reaction.
