Description: linear patch of complete hair loss
Comments: This 24-year-old man had an episode of patchy hair loss diagnosed as alopecia areata and treated successfully with 2 weeks of high dose steroids 2 years ago. One month ago he developed a band of complete hair loss more consistent with trichotillomania. The patient did admit to repeated self administered “pull tests” after the regrowth of hair following treatment with oral mini pulse steroids for alopecia areata.

Description: well demarcated area of hair loss with hairs of varying lengths and stubble
Comments: A 16-year-old boy had a history of chronic migrating patches of hair loss for 6 months. The presence of stubble, crusts, and hairs of different lengths suggested a diagnosis of traumatic hair loss. One cm long hairs were noted on a 4 X 2 cm area in the patch after a 1 month application of an occlusive dressing.

Comments: This adolescent boy had a history of weirdly shaped areas of almost complete hair loss that changed from week to week as old areas regrow and new areas appeared at the border. The patterns of loss did not follow any anatomical landmarks.
