| Comments: | This young woman bith off a hangnail between the nail plate and the lateral nail fold. Two days later she developed pain and swelling deep to the lateral nail fold. Pustule formation was evident but subtle. It resolved with conservative treatment (cephalexin and frequent warm soapy soaks). | ||||

The paronychial area was crusted with purulent drainage for several days. Warm compresses helped to relieve the pain. He prpbably had an acute paronychia superimposed on chronic infection resulting in transverse grooves in the nail. | ||||
