Comments: This 22-month-old boy with moderately severe atopic dermatitis developed a painful abscess at the base of the left great toe nail. The lesion healed rapidly after incision and drainage and warm tap water soaks.

Description: swollen, exquisitely tender distal left index finger.
Comments: This young woman bith off a hangnail between the nail plate and the lateral nail fold. Two days later she developed pain and swelling deep to the lateral nail fold. Pustule formation was evident but subtle. It resolved with conservative treatment (cephalexin and frequent warm soapy soaks).

Description: red tender swollen crusted paronychial area
Comments: This 12 year old boy with longstanding finger warts developed tender swelling of the skin around the middle right finger nail. The paronychial area was crusted with purulent drainage for several days. Warm compresses helped to relieve the pain. He prpbably had an acute paronychia superimposed on chronic infection resulting in transverse grooves in the nail.
