DermAtlas: VULVA (LABIA) - hemangioma
© 2001-2010, DermAtlas
Image Name: hemangioma_11_080316   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: HEMANGIOMA /
ULCER
  Category: neonatal dermatology /
ulcer /
lumps & bumps (plaques, nodules, tumors)
Body Site: vulva (labia) / anus
diaper area / perianal
perineum
  Age: 9 months
Contributor: Katherine Puttgen, MD
Description: 3 weeks after initiation of treatment-almost complete healing with only a few small erosions remaining
Comments: This healthy 10-month-old girl developed a hemangioma in the anogenital area shortly after birth. It grew for 3-4 months, stabilized and then ulcerated at 8 months of age. She was treated twice with pulsed dye laser without improvement. The ulcers extended and the pain disrupted feeding and sleep. Within 3 days of initiating 3 mg/kg/day of oral prednisolone granulation tissue appeared at the border of the ulcerations and she was able to sleep through the night. Within 3 weeks the ulcers were almost completely healed and the medication was tapered over a total of 3 months. Treatment of ulcerated hemangiomas usually requires multiple modalities, and many lesions may take months to heal.
