DermAtlas: EYE BROW - alopecia mucinosa
© 2001-2009, DermAtlas
Image Name: follicular_mucinosis_1_050211   File Type: jpg
Diagnosis: ALOPECIA MUCINOSA /
FOLLICULAR MUCINOSIS
  Category: hair disorders /
collagen vascular disease /
cutaneous sign of systemic disease
Body Site: eye brow / forearm
face
  Age: 21 years
Contributor: Rakhesh SV, MD
Description: multiple infiltrated skin colored papules and plaques studded with yellow 1-2 mm papules
Comments: This 21-year-old man developed focal hair loss and slowly increasing boddy swelling over the right eye brow for 5 years. The lesions were studded with yellow follicular papules with loss of hair. There was no associated loss of sensation. The histological picture of mucinous deposits in the outer root sheaths of hair follicles was consistent with the clinical diagnosis of follicular mucinosis/alopecia mucinosa. The lesions showed mild regression with intralesional corticosteroids.

DermAtlas: Histology - syringolymphoid hyperplasia with alopecia

Body Site: foot / toe   Age: 52 years
Contributor: Clemens Esche, MD
Description: There is a dense infiltrate of large atypical lymphocytes around an eccrine duct (syringotropism).
Comments: This 52-year-old man had a 5 year history of disseminated scaly brown papules with lesions on the feet suggesting dyshidrotic eczema. He also had red papules on his legs with complete alopecia. Biopsies from his legs showed changes typical of syringolymphoid hyperplasia with alopecia. Further studies revealed biallelic monoclonal rearrangement of the T-cell gamma chain gene typical of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. See Esche, et al. Arch Dermatol 1998;134:753-4.
