This 26-year-old woman developed a painful vesicular eruption on the vulva. A smear from the base of a blister showed multinucleated giant cells typical of Herpes virus infection and serologic studies were positive for Herpes simplex virus type II. The eruption and symptoms improved with valacyclovir 1 gram twice a day over the next week.
