This man was diagnosed with mastocytosis with a skin biopsy in 1990. A bone marrow biopsy from the right iliac crest showed an increased number of mast cells as well. Treatment with H1 (Chlorpheniramine 8mgm qid and H2 (Zantac 150mgm qid) together with Naproxen 500mgm bid (to block Prostaglandin D2) has been successful in preventing symptoms. However, for emergencies, theatient carries an EpiPen 0.3mgm for self treatment in severe flushing attacks which sometimes lead to anaphylaxis.
