Comments

An abnormal tuft of hair was present in the lumbosacral area of a healthy 7 year old girl at birth. Imaging studies of the underlying spine were normal. Congenital anomalies of the skin overlying the lumbosacral spine, including hemangiomas, dimples, faun tail nevi, pigmented nev, and others, can be associated with spinal dysraphism. When necessary, early surgical repair of spinal defects can minimize the risk of development of neurologic symptoms in later childhood or adolescence.
