A 65 year old woman was evaluated for a black hairy tongue. Treatment consisted in brushing the tongue twice daily with a tooth brush. A solution of 0.5 percent tretinoïn was subsequently applied and removed a few minutes later for 4 weeks. Although black hairy tongue can be associated with administration of antibiotics, diabetes mellitus and other systemic disorders, this woman was otherwise healthy.
