Morphology

Comments

This was a large mass shelled out of the pre-auricular area in a 73-year-old man. Due to the location, a salivary gland neoplasm was also considered; however, the histologic features were characteristic for a spiradenoma. This is a good example of the many different patterns seen in a spiradenoma.

Description

At higher power, two cell populations are observed, both the small monotonous basophilic cells and admixed larger cells with more pale nuclei. Small ductules are seen. Abundant basement membrane material and vascular lakes are characteristic.
