A 17 year old boy complained of worsening painful swelling and erythema over his right knee for 5 days. On examination he had a tender fluctuant mass with a central crust overlying the knee. He felt much better after the abscess was incised and drained. After 2 days of parenteral antibiotics in the hospital, he completed a 10 day course of oral antibiotics with complete resolution of the wound. A culture of pus subseuqently grew Staphylococcus aureus.
