This term newborn was covered with reddish purple 0.5-1 cm nonblanching macules and papules. On exam he was found to have microcephaly and hepatomegaly. A skin biopsy showed extramedullary hematopoiesis, and head US showed diffuse calcifications. The clinical and laboratory findings were typical of cytomegalovirus or other TORCH infection in the newborn.
