Day 9-This healthy man felt a stinging pain in his right thigh while sleeping in bed and found a spider that fit the description of a brown recluse scampering down the bed sheets. Within 24 hours he developed a painful purpuric patch with underlying bluish discoloration. He was evaluated in the emergency room and referred for admission to the hospital in Perkin, Illinois where the lesion was debrided resulting in a 12.4 cm oval wound to fat. He was subsequently treated with parenteral antibiotics and grafting. This image was taken on the day of the bite.
