Comments

This healthy 9-year-old boy developed large tender deep seated boils many capped with purplent draining pustules. Shortly before admission to the hospital he developed a fever to 38.5 degrees C, tender fluctuant local lymph nodes, and overlying cellulitis. The lesions were widespread and many arose in infected insect bites. He was treated with parenteral antibiotics and discharged 2 days later on a 2 week course of oral antibiotics. Cultures grew methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
