Comments

This neurtopenic febrile 6-year-old leukemic developed an enlarging necrotic purple-gray plaque on the top of his hand which was discovered when the arm pad and intravenous catheter were removed. A touch preparation of debris from a skin biopsy showed numerous hyphae and the culture grew Mucor. The red ring was drawn the night before the image was taken. Note the puncture wound from the intravenous catheter inferior to the plaque.
