A 2 week old infant developed fever and a tender edematous violaceous plaque around the umbilicus with crusting over the cord stump. Cultures from the stump grew Staphyl;ococcus aureus. A full evaluation for sepsis was negative and the child improved quickly with parenteral antibiotics.
