This 48 year old woman developed recurrent bullae, crusts and atrophic scars on the tops of her hands and feet. She also complained of increased skin fragility and worsening of the rash during the summer months. A skin biopsy showed changes typical of porphyria cutanea tarda. She did admit to drinking at least 3-4 beers a day. She took an occasional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug for arthritis but no other medications, and there was no family history of blistering disorders.
