This healthy adolescent boy developed an acute pruritic dermatitic eruption on his shins 2 weeks ago. He was treated with oral antibiotics without improvement for 10 days. Four days ago the eruption disseminated to his trunk, extremities, face, and ears. The oral antibiotic was continued for an additional 3 days, he was also given a tapering course of oral prednisone for 2 weeks. The lesions were dramatically better within 48-72 hours. He was an avid soccer player, and his father said that the plastic and protective materials were frayed. Patch testing to standard allergens and to various comppents of his soccer shin guards was planned.
