This healthy toddler developed a fever and crusting around the nose, eyes and mouth followed by erythema on the face spreading to the chest and lower extremities over 2 days. Note the erosions that appeared when the monitor leads were removed from his chest. Erosions also appeared on his right temple after scratching. Staphylococcus aureus grew from a culture swabbed over the upper lip. He never developed erosions or blistering of the conjunctivae or mouth. He was treated with parenteral antibiotics and recovered within 5 days. Two weeks later he peeled diffusely particularly over the palms and soles.
