Comments

This 3 year old healthy boy never had a haircut. His scalp hair was 3-4 cm long, dry, and lusterless, and decreased in density. His eye brows and lashes were thin and short. His nails and dentition appeared normal, and he had no problems with hyperthermia. No other members of the family were affected. Examination of his hair shafts revealed hairs with irregular surfaces and varying diameters. Polarizing microscopy using crossed polarizers in the position of extinction showed zebralike alternating dark and light bands which probably correlate with varying concentrations of sulfur along the hair shaft.

Description

Some hairs show dramatic zebralike alternating light and dark bands.
