This organism accounts for 95 percent or more of the tinea capitis infections in the United States and is found most commonly in Afro-American school age children. It produces endothrix hair invasion resulting in hair shaft fragility. When infected hairs break at the surface they leave patches studded with black dots typical of Trichophyton tonsurans tinea capitis
